Weekly Fanwork Recs #15
Feb. 28th, 2021 07:48 pmGetting back into it. In podfic circles, both the Awesome Ladies Podfic Anthology XI and the Podfic Big Bang 2021 dropped, which I recommend browsing in general because they are awesome projects. It's sad I managed to not contribute to ALPA a second year in a row, because it's truly amazing.
First Wish by
QueenAng. G1 & TFP mix, MegOP, Rated G, No Warnings Apply, ~1.5k.
A sad what-could-have-been story about what Optimus would wish for, featuring Jazz as the inciting incident.
Earth by
Speechless_since_1998. MTMTE/ATLA mix, implied MegOP, Rodimus & Megatron, Rated T, Chose Not To Warn, ~3.5k.
The ideas in this fic are full of potential. It’s mostly a quick oneshot about Megatron, imprisoned after he killed the last Avatar, being asked in a dream by the same Avatar to train his next incarnation. Megatron as an earthbender makes a lot of sense and the author put some great thought into how the element, his character and the fighting style intersect. On top of never happened MegOP has a natural banter relationship with his student. This story has weaknesses in spelling & grammar - either ESL author or younger teen - and some quotes/scenarios repurposed, which I didn’t find egregious or could ignore, but might weaken it for others.
Primes Don’t Party(*) by
auri_mynonys. TFP, MegOP, Rated E, No Warnings Apply, ~34.5k.
This is another fic I have been following waiting for updates with bated breath. Sequel to “Designation: Mine”, this one has Megatron and Optimus at odds during a post-war peace. And they are pining so hard I was both endeared and had second-hand embarassment. This fic is truly glorious, from Megatron goading Optimus into drinking at a formal function, Optimus flirting back, Megatron becoming more hopeful as he is incredibly flustered and up to the moment where many readers, me included, thought Optimus had drunkenly fallen off a balcony. It can get a bit too fluffy or sentimental at times, but unless allergic to fluff I recommend it.
The Singer by
16woodsequ. TFP, Gen, Megatron & Starscream, Elite Trine, Megatron & Optimus Prime, Rated T, No Warnings Apply, ~48.5k.
Megatron, send in this au as a representtive of Kaon, investigates the Singer, a seeker which can only communicate in song and is in this verse traditionally best translated by a Prime. The current one, Starscream, isn’t getting much attention from Sentinel. I enjoyed the atmosphere in this one and kept with it to learn how Megatron would free the Singer.
