Summary:
Alphys‘ back hurts. She’s slowly waking up – being a night owl is not just a habit – and it feels like someone stomped on her and then started picnicking right on top of her. A heavy someone, maybe Asgore, she imagines, coming down from his castle and marching right into her lab to ask her face to face about what happened to all the monsters that should be dead but aren’t—
She sits up with a jerk and no one is there and she remembers, she told the truth and brought the Amalgamates back to their families. So she doesn’t have to confess to Asgore, because it already has happened and the barrier was broken anyway. So. Why was she hurting?
She sits up and concentrates, scanning the area. Around her is a pile of rubble, scorch marks from what is probably an uncontrolled explosion or energy discharge of some kind. Wow, that is so embarrassing; she hasn’t had anything like that happen in years, unless you count Mettaton EX, which she doesn’t. That body was still in the design phase.
Standing up, she can see the culprit of her back pain: being hurled into a wall and passing out with the resulting debris digging into her back. Way to go, Alphys. She’s definitely still woozy from it; her perspective is off and shifting from side to side. She feels like she’s walking on stilts.
In another corner, something else is groaning. Someone else? Maybe they were here as well when the explosion happened – Alphys tries to remember what she was even trying to do, but nothing comes to mind, except… Undyne was there with her, watching Alphys experiment while she polished her spears. Oh no!
“Oh no!” Alphys can’t stop herself from repeating out loud and her mouth feels funny. “Undyne!” It feels like she’s gargling rocks and her teeth have moved and are sharper. No matter, Undyne needs her help. She rushes towards the groaning.
It comes from under a set of concrete slabs which luckily broke in a way to form a tent-like structure sheltering whoever was stuck under there. Or maybe Undyne managed to punch them hard enough to break them that way. As Alphys nervously taps around trying to make a plan to help her girlfriend the groans morph into swearing.
“Daughter of a human! Alphys, is that you out there? I hear someone running around.” Undyne’s voice gets distorted by the echo, sounding not nearly as low as her normal deep sea trench growl.
“Undyne! Yeah, it’s me.” Alphys kneads her hands for a moment feeling relief. Undyne’s voice is very passionate and Alphys likes it a lot, but Alphys likes Undyne even more. “Are you hurt?”
“Hah, hurt! These walls have watched me suplex boulders so often that they’re too scared to even scratch me. There’s nothing to worry about, Alphys.” Undyne doesn’t sound hurt, but for a moment Alphys imagines hearing a slight strain in her voice. She shakes her head and banishes the notion. Undyne has never been afraid in her life. She tunes back into Undyne’s speech. “Are you alright as well?”
“Yes.” Alphys says and realises immediately that it is not completely true. “Well, mostly. I’m a bit dizzy, but it’s not like I have a concussion or anything. I’m sure it will go away soon.” She tests both slates absentmindedly. One has enough other debris lying on the other end that it is effectively stuck and held securely. If Undyne can move the other one, she should be able to come out safely. “I think I got a plan on how to get you out of there.”
As Alphys thought, the two pieces of concrete do make up the hollow space Undyne ended up in. She has Undyne orient herself with the help of her own voice and push the right slab. Nothing happens.
“That’s weird.” Alphys says, still feeling a little woozy. Did she mess up somewhere and give Undyne the wrong instructions? “Maybe try the other one; I might have gotten them mixed up for you.”
“Ngahh!” Undyne tries to move the other slab as well, without success. That’s bad – if Undyne isn’t strong enough to move them herself the slab’s weight must be enormous. How can Alphys manage to lift it? Her heavy tools probably got damaged in the explosion, if she can find them under all this rubble.
“Alphys!” Undyne interrupts her before she can spiral more into anxiety. “Let’s try moving the first one again together.”
Alphys moves automatically to help her. She doubts there’s anything she could do even if she wasn’t feeling lightheaded. Undyne didn’t even manage to budge it. Alphys crouches on her stilted legs and grips the edge.
“You got it, Alphys? On three!” Undyne says. To Alphys’ surprise, the plate doesn’t feel as heavy as she imagined and they’re able to move it enough without too much effort. Undyne must have born most of the weight.
Alphys backs up from the rift to give Undyne room to climb out. There’s some scraping and swearing and a yellow dragon emerges. She wears a lab coat like Alphys. They’re almost identical. They could be clones; o-or magical twins, like in Raw Lovely Heal.
Alphys stands up awkwardly on her legs, legs attached to a body that make her at least double the height of the lab coat dragon; a body that can lift a slab of concrete without breaking in sweat. She says: “Undyne?” and the yellow dragon turns to her, eyes getting comically huge.

So, they switched bodies. Alphys hyperventilates for a good minute while Undyne hugs her around the legs, patting her butt with awkward sincerity. Thankfully, fish are very bad at hyperventilation, so it goes better than most panic attacks Alphys has had.
Undyne gets them both drinks when Alphys has relaxed enough, tea for herself and a soda for Alphys. She accidentally crushes the first can Undyne hands her, but the second she handles carefully enough to only leave a few dents.
“Feel better?”
“A bit.” Alphys takes a few sips. “I feel really strange being so tall. Everything looks different.” She had already bumped her head several times. Combined with her usual clumsiness and Undyne’s body strength she was certain to do some damage in her home. Well, what was left undamaged at least.
Undyne chugs her tea thoughtfully. “Yeah, I never had to look up at you. And your tail is tripping me up. I have to concentrate to keep it lifted all the time.”
Alphys doesn’t answer, instead looking around the room and trying to remember. There’s dust everywhere, coating her workspace and the machines. Some will need to be replaced, but nothing too bad. She’s not sure what exploded, though. She was trying to figure out something about monster souls, maybe, trying to find a way to use the work that had led to the accidental creation of the amalgamations. Nothing that was ready for the experimental phase though. She couldn’t have been so reckless—
“You got any idea on how to start fixing this?” Undyne breaks into her thought process. Her resting face looks completely out of place. Right, she had come over to train while letting Alphys ramble about her theories. And some kisses whenever she thought they needed a break.
Alphys flushes and tries to get her attention back on the Undyne in front of her. The Undyne in Alphys’ body. “I think… I think we might have switched souls? Maybe? I don’t know why or what triggered it at all, however! I didn’t think this was possible at all, I mean…”
Alphys stops. Undyne is grinning at her, her bright, all teeth grin stretched across her face. “Why are you smiling? Aren’t you mad, or upset?”
“Because. You sound like Alphys again. All scientific and flustered. You’ll figure it out, I’m sure. You’re not Royal Scientist for nothing, right?”
Alphys doesn’t think it’s possible for fish to cry, so the burning in her eyes has to be entirely in her imagination. “Thank you, Undyne.” She hugs her own body – and how weird is that, still – as delicately as possible, letting her arms envelop Undyne. She loves it when Undyne does it. And before she can stop herself, she lays a kiss smack on her as well.
They sit together and hold hands for a while after that, just looking at each other, until Undyne declares that is time to go to work and clean up.
