Weekly Fanwork Recs #25
May. 17th, 2021 10:33 pmI am giddy with joy because I have a functional desktop computer again. I build it, I switched to Ubuntu and now we are getting acquainted together. Why is this great? Besides finally having Audacity access, no longer having to use gdocs, it also means I can use program windows and do radical things like having a document and a browser open next to each other! It feels almost decadent to not have to switch back and forth all the damn time just to double check information as I make this rec list. Score!
Mermay comic by
gemsheldrake. Overwatch, R76, Some Graphic Violence, 46 images.
Petitecreme is a wonderful artist with amazing talent for moody horror comics. I especially love her line work. She made a full comic for Mermay this year, with Eldritch mer god Gabriel falling in love with a lighthouse keeper. It has a bit of a bittersweet ending, but if you like horror, this is for you.
[Podfic] But Have You Got The Touch? written by
impertinence, read by
greedy_dancer. Venom (2018), Symbrock, Rated E, No Warnings Apply, ~16min.
Greedy_dancer has an excellent voice and reads this podfic beautifully! Venom gets cute soundeffects. The plot is… mostly about them fucking, but I think that’s no surprise. This work also has another podfic by Annapods, KDHeart and sylvaine, if anyone wants to compare and contrast!
A Cure for Inexorability by
Neocybex. IDW, Megatron/Starscream/Tarn, Rated E, No Warnings Apply, Mild Dub-Con, ~5k.
Guuuuhhhh. This is some hot porn of the sex pollen variety, that is: Starscream accidentally makes an aphrodisiac instead of poison and douses Tarn and himself. Megatron takes charge of the results. Great porn, honestly.
[Podfic] Pillar written by
stiction, read by
Gilraina. IDW, Chromia/Windblade, Rated E, No Warnings Apply, ~11 min.
As a change of pace, female Transformers slash! Yay! I have praised Gilraina before and I will do it again: a methodical, slow reading style that makes every filthy line hit more deliberately. Unf!
Stuck by
LadySibilance. G1, Megatron/Starscream, Rated E, No Warnings Apply, Crack, ~18.5k.
In which Starscream and Megatron are so averse to talking about their feelings, they manage to be knotted together on accident for two whole days. Hi-jinks ensue as they try to keep it secret, of course. Lighthearted overall, but they get to the feelings eventually. <3
[Podfic] Witcher’s Work read by
chantress. Witcher, Gen, Rated G, No Warnings Apply, ~2 min.
A poem about Witcher’s Work that is actually a metaphor. Moving, especially in these times.
Set the bone straight by
galateaGalvanized. SW The Clone Wars, Cody/Obi-Wan Kenobi, Rated T, No Warnings Apply, ~10k.
Last time I thought I was done reading Clone Wars fics, but apparently I am not. *sigh* This one is a Purge Trooper Cody story that gets into the emotions. I like the approach of the author that Cody isn’t completely free of the chip, but switches back and forth depending on the day. It’s not clean like other Post-Canon Fix-Its and that’s what makes it special. The story does have a hopeful, almost fluffy ending however and is not too dark.
Pave Your Way with Stones Well Chosen by
TrickyTricky. SW The Clone Wars, Cody/Obi-Wan Kenobi, Rated M, Graphic Depictions of Violence, ~19k.
Another story about Cody post Fall of the Republic. The usual beats are hit – he gets free, frees other clones and searches for Obi-Wan. A nice twist on this is the theme of revenge vs healing, which are at first intertwined for Cody, but Obi-Wan forces him to chose consciously early. The anger Cody has is something I miss in other stories of the kind.
[Podfic] sea-called written by Anonymous, read by Anonymous. The Great Silkie of Sule Skerry (Traditional Ballad), Maiden/Silkie, Rated T, No Warnings Apply, ~8 min.
I haven’t heard the ballad, but this story was compelling nonetheless. I’m looking forward to checking it out!
When We Were Young by
Tate_The_Great. SW The Clone Wars, Cody/Obi-Wan Kenobi, Rated T, No Warnings Apply, ~34k.
AU where Order 66 didn’t happen, two years after the end of the war. Instead of dating, Cody and Obi-Wan have drifted apart. I enjoyed the sort of melancholy here? There is, of course, a happy ending, but the feeling of missed opportunities, even if it was no-one’s fault, resonates with me. Thankfully, it is never too late to fix things.
the boat that would row you back by
adiduck. SW The Clone Wars, Cody/Obi-Wan Kenobi, Rated T, Warning for Major Character Death, ~12.5k.
Based of Obi-Wan’s death in the original trilogy, where his body vanishes aka becomes one with the Force. Darth Vader disables Cody’s chip and orders him to bring Obi-Wan back. It hits a lot of the emotional beats in regards to Clones being dehumanized and doubles as a Travel into the Underworld story, with Orpheus and Eurydice as clear influence.
Etiquette Lessons (Type A, Type B) by
ghostwriterofthemachine. ST The Clone Wars, Cody/Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker & Rex, Rated T, No Warnings Apply, ~3k.
Obi-Wan and Anakin give advice to their commanders on how to act during a formal event. What makes this story is the clear parallels to their own past and, more generally, how both approaches are trauma informed ways of dealing with the world. This may give you feelings if you have been in that situation.
Crab by
fascinationex. IDW, Sympatico, Rated G, No Warnings Apply, ~1k.
Will there be a week where I don’t rec one new seal mermaid story from fascinationex? Maybe, but I hope it doesn’t come soon. This round: Brainstorm gifts a live crab to Perceptor, who is frankly out of his depth here.
