Cartoons and a fic rec
Sep. 27th, 2015 09:29 pmI didn't do really all that much this week, so have some thoughts on cartoons:
- Gravity Falls: Watched "The Last Mabelcorn", which was overall good. I originally thought the twist of the episode was going to be Wendy turning out to be pure of heart. Instead, it was even better and the resolution was about no one really being "pure" and how some actions that look bad might be for the best. People that judge you without knowing you might be full of shit, so value the opinion of your friends and family. I liked how Wendy took charge but when it came down to it, Mabel did the deed.
- Steven Universe: Watched Season 2 episodes 16-18. The middle episode was a cute episode about Sadie. The other two were plot heavy and very dark. Mentally preparing myself for the season final revelations.
Ep. 16 is "The Nightmare Hospital". It had a sweet plot about Connie revealing to her parents, which are very controlling, what she has been doing with Steven. I loved how they made clear, that while her mother is still worried about Connie, she gets that both of their control issues lead to her keeping the secrets. She also makes a sincere promise to keep an open mind and Connie promises to be more open. Aww. (Here I teared up because while I don't think my parent are super controlling, sometimes I feel like I would like them more to trust me with some stuff so when I'm in actual trouble I'm fine with asking them for help, knowing they will respect my boundaries and wish to fail for myself.)
Very sweet, only the plot frames an encounter with nightmarish forced gem fusions at Ms. Maheswaran's hospital. They were brought in as patients and behave zombie-like. On top of that, Connie's mom refuses to let Connie do something about them when they attack as she doesn't know about her training. These scenes are legitimately scary.
Ep. 18 is "Catch and Release". The gems capture a desperate Peridot. She's scared enough about something called the "Cluster" hatching or birthing and wants to get off the Earth. There's no contact to Yellow Diamond, but her fear comes through clear. Whatever she knows is without doubt going to be worrying in the future. While the gems just bubble her up, Steven is thankfully equally worried and frees her to talk. We get to see more of her form - her arms and legs were not actually part of her and she's actually not much bigger than Steven or Amethyst.
The episode ends with Peridot holing up in the bathroom permanently - Steven an convince the gems that whatever information she has is valuable. He is unable to get her to talk, but gets access to the bathroom and does some trust building.
As a status quo, it is very cute and an excellent fanfic set up for friendly foe type fic. All the information we get is very interesting and people will undoubtedly get a lot of theories until the next episode.
And, at last, an unique crossover fanfic I want to rec:
"Fairies Aren't Gentleman" by AMarguerite, Jeeves & Wooster and Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell.
Summary: "Or, "The Other Club Book." Bertie Wooster accidentally attends a party hosted by the Chappie with Thistledown Hair in the Faerie kingdom of Lost-Hope, and finds it dashed difficult to get out of another invitation. How can Jeeves possibly get him out of the soup when Bertie can't describe his rummy circs?"
The author does a good job of hitting the tone of the Jeeves books as well as making the crossover canon-compliant to both. Stephen Black is an important character in this, which is always delightful.

Date: 2015-09-29 06:11 am (UTC)Yay, I hope I can interest you in the fic, if you only know Jeeves and Wooster, it should still be understandable. As you can guess, deals with faerie abduction, the nasty kind. :)

Date: 2015-09-30 11:35 pm (UTC)I get that it's meant to be a comedy but I just get stuck on the Nice but Dim thing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NC0IJQ_s7No
I do also sometimes watch Downton Abbey so I can cheer when terrible things happen to the family.

Date: 2015-10-01 12:45 am (UTC)I guess it makes sense to be conerned about class treatment and that Bertie Wooster is maybe not the brightest bulb. I don't know I guess you have to get your own impression. For me, I can see how it could go terribly wrong in the format but the books (and the series who adapts them quite well) just strike the balance really, really well. Jeeves is always the smarter of the two and Berte is just overjoyed tohave his paragon. On the flip side, Bertie only gets into half the situations because he's always one to lend a hand. And because honestly every single person in his acquaintance gets into what can only be called hijinks. It's idealised and it is basically a rom com without the com, so if you want a examination of the systems of power, it's not here. But it is pure comfort food for the soul.
Ok, I'm stopping here with my waxing, of course it's not perfect. For example, one episode featured explicit blackface when his club friends want to put on a ministrel show - should this have been filmed this way in 93 or is it period typical racism that is not swept under the table? I'm not sure but I don't think it was necessary to have it in. There's probably more that can be criticised.
So... idk, skip it or not, I'm still a fan, I guess.
